A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
